August Happenings

Summers area always busy on the farm and this year is no exception and there seems to be no sign of slowing down.  Since we no longer had Keith's job in the city, we are living off of our savings and farm income only and boy does that increase creativity.  *smile*  We must develop ways to harvest in all four seasons.

To that end, we had saved money for an additional greenhouse and finally we found an Amish family who builds just what we needed.  The new greenhouse was just delivered today.  This will be home to winter vegetables which we hope to be able to harvest well into January!

It was quite a feat to get this put down on the foundation that Keith built.  Here is the play by play:

It started with the foundation: Keith with some help of Dylan, put in the foundation and leveled it over a few weeks' time.

Dylan hauling rocks... his favorite job.  (not! *wink*)

And today it finally arrived!

Men discussing exactly how this 3000+ lb thing will be dropped on to the foundation.

Easy does it...

Inch by inch...

The goats are not impressed by the whole experience...

With much cleaver ingenuity... it is lowered on to the foundation

Getting it all in place and eventually anchored down.  Finished photos to come later.

This greenhouse has no need of electricity (yippee!) as the windows open automatically when the heat inside is too high.  How?  The tubes inside the window arms contain beeswax.  When the heat rises, the beeswax expands and the arm opens the windows.  How great is that?

Other happenings on the farm - harvesting, freezing and canning!

The canner is running almost weekly now.

Leftovers are made into yummy things such as homemade pizzas.

Encounters of the "goat kind" happen daily.  They bring much laughter and entertainment to our farm!

And more canning of pickles - our favorite Bread and Butter pickle recipe.

I'll leave out the mishaps such as the poison ivy incident and other farm challenges - all in all, we've had a productive month and looking forward to more challenges coming soon.
